The comic background to Superman Returns comes from several pieces of source material rather than a single issue reproduced on screen. Start with Superman #1, then compare it with Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? #423/Action #583 and Kingdom Come #1–4. Reading the references alongside the movie makes it easier to see what the filmmakers retained, combined or reinvented for the screen.
