Engineer John Henry Irons is inspired by Superman after the Man of Steel saves his life. When Superman is believed dead, Irons builds a powerful suit of armour and takes to the streets to stop weapons based on technology he once helped create. Adopting the name Steel, he becomes a hero in his own right rather than attempting simply to replace Superman.
