Kara Zor-El is Superman's Kryptonian cousin, sent from the doomed world of Krypton to Earth. Although her journey and arrival have been retold in different ways, she survives to discover that her younger cousin Kal-El has already grown into Superman. Under Earth's yellow sun Kara gains Kryptonian powers and builds her own identity as Supergirl rather than simply living in Superman's shadow.
