Police scientist Barry Allen is struck by lightning while surrounded by chemicals, an extraordinary accident that gives him super-speed and a connection to the Speed Force. Inspired by the comic-book adventures of an earlier Flash, Jay Garrick, Barry adopts the identity himself. His ability to move beyond normal physical limits eventually makes him central to stories involving time travel and DC's multiverse.
