Yelena Belova is trained in Russia's Red Room to become a Black Widow and is encouraged to see Natasha Romanoff as the standard she must surpass. Their early encounters place Yelena in direct competition with Natasha, but experience exposes the manipulation behind her training. She gradually develops an identity beyond the Red Room and operates as a spy, assassin and antihero on her own terms.
