Scientist Alec Holland is caught in an explosion in the Louisiana swamps while working on a bio-restorative formula. The classic story initially presents the plant-like Swamp Thing as Holland transformed, but later reveals a stranger truth: the creature is elemental plant life that absorbed Holland's memories and believed itself human. That revelation opens Swamp Thing's connection to the Green and the wider natural world.
