The comic background to The Punisher comes from several pieces of source material rather than a single issue reproduced on screen. Start with The Amazing Spider-Man #129, then compare it with Punisher #1–5 (1986) and Punisher War Journal #1. Reading the references alongside the movie makes it easier to see what the filmmakers retained, combined or reinvented for the screen.
