Charles Xavier is born with immense telepathic mutant abilities and comes to believe that mutants and humans can build a peaceful future together. He establishes Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters both to educate young mutants and to train the X-Men, a team intended to protect a world that often fears them. His ideals become one of the central philosophies of the X-Men mythos.
