Max Eisenhardt survives the Holocaust and later discovers extraordinary mutant control over magnetism. Convinced that humanity will eventually persecute mutants as it has persecuted other minorities, he adopts the name Magneto and fights to ensure mutant survival, often through methods opposed by Professor Xavier and the X-Men. Their conflict is complicated by shared history, respect and periods of genuine cooperation.
