The Hulk is the destructive alter ego of scientist Bruce Banner, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1962. Exposure to gamma radiation leaves Banner transforming under extreme stress, and film versions have explored both the tragedy of that condition and his role as an immensely powerful Avenger.

Scientist Bruce Banner is caught in the blast of an experimental gamma bomb while saving teenager Rick Jones. Instead of killing him, the radiation causes Banner to transform into the immensely powerful Hulk, whose personality and form change with Bruce's emotional state. Their shared existence becomes a struggle involving trauma, anger, identity and the consequences of almost limitless strength.
