Weapons industrialist and engineer Tony Stark is gravely wounded and captured while demonstrating military technology. Forced to build a weapon for his captors, he instead creates powered armour that keeps him alive and enables his escape. Stark continues refining the armour as Iron Man, gradually confronting the human cost of his business and using his technology directly as a hero.
