Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition draws together recognisable comic-story material and reshapes it for a self-contained feature-film narrative. Start with The Dark Knight Returns #1–4, then compare it with The Death of Superman (Superman #75) and Superman: Birthright #1–12. Reading the references alongside the movie makes it easier to see what the filmmakers retained, combined or reinvented for the screen.
