Suicide Squad combines ideas from more than one period of the comics, so its source material is better read as a group than as one direct adaptation. Start with Legends #3, then compare it with Suicide Squad #1–8 (1987) and New 52 Suicide Squad #1–7. Reading the references alongside the movie makes it easier to see what the filmmakers retained, combined or reinvented for the screen.
