Birds of Prey combines ideas from more than one period of the comics, so its source material is better read as a group than as one direct adaptation. Start with Birds of Prey #1–8 (1999), then compare it with Harley Quinn #1–8 (2014) and Batman #386–387 (Black Mask). Reading the references alongside the movie makes it easier to see what the filmmakers retained, combined or reinvented for the screen.
